What is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study, or polysomnogram, is a recording that includes measurements used to identify different sleep stages, breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels, muscle activity and heart rhythm, and is used to diagnose sleep disorders. The recording is accomplished by using electrodes applied to the head and skin with an adhesive. Flexible elastic belts around the chest and abdomen measure breathing.

There are different types of sleep studies, the most common are:

Polysomnogram (PSG) - general monitoring and evaluation, usually done overnight. This test records several body functions during sleep, including brain activity, eye movement, oxygen and carbon dioxide blood levels, heart rate and rhythm, breathing rate and rhythm, the flow of air through your mouth and nose, snoring, body muscle movements, and chest and belly movement.

Split Night PSG with CPAP Titration - a Split Night PSG is conducted when moderate or severe Sleep Apnea has been discovered or strongly suspected during the first part of the night study. The second half of the night is used for CPAP titration to determine the optimal pressure used to treat Sleep Apnea.

Daytime Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) - a series of 5 naps used to diagnose Narcolepsy and measure the degree of daytime sleepiness. This test measures how long it takes you to fall asleep. To ensure accurate results, it is performed on the morning following a Diagnostic Overnight PSG.

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) - a series of 5 naps used to measure how alert you are during the day. This test measures whether you can stay awake during a time when you are normally awake.

We provide a full range of diagnostic testing utilizing experienced sleep technicians and respiratory care practitioners specially trained in sleep diagnostics. We also utilize transcutaneous oxygen monitoring (TCM) for appropriate patients. In addition to a high level of clinical expertise, all testing is done with state of the art diagnostic equipment. Patients are educated regarding sleep diagnostic procedures and treatments. Once a patient has been tested, an experienced sleep physician interprets the data and advises treatment options.
